Snap, the operator of Snapchat, is in talks to buy Chinese drone maker Zero Zero Robotics for US $ 150-200 million, the Chinese version of Technode reports. The acquisition of Zero Zero Robotics by domestic and foreign companies was previously denied by the company's founder and CEO, Wang Mengqiu, but Snap declined to comment on the report.
The acquisition has just launched his Snapchat-enabled eyewear product with a built-in camera called Spectacles, which was initially sold exclusively in vending machines, but will further expand Snap's hardware division. Snap acquired Ctrl Me Robotics in May, but sales of this product show that the company remains interested in consumer-level selfie drones. Ctrl Me Robotics makes hardware and software for movies, and he's also rumors that Snap may build drones in-house to stay ahead of competitors like Instagram and Facebook.
Beijing-based Zero Zero builds his Hover Camera Passport Drone, an autonomous flight, lightweight, four-propeller, foldable HD drone, which uses facial recognition for user tracking. The product is sold only through Apple and is priced at US $ 500.
