Started development of a multi -frequency meteorological radar system that automatically determines rain, snow, and clouds | WeatherNews Inc.

Weather News Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Mihama -ku, Chiba City, President: Chihito Kusakai) will launch the world's first multi -frequency meteorological radar system that automatically determines rain, snow and clouds (fog). Announced. In recent years, the practical use of next -generation empty mobility such as flying cars and drones has been attracting attention. For practical use, weather information specialized in the route is required, but it is difficult to observe the clouds in high resolution even if you use conventional technology. Therefore, we have launched a multi -frequency meteorological radar to support the safe operation of next -generation empty mobility and the optimal route selection. In the conventional weather radar, one radar system uses a single frequency band, but the radar developed in this study uses multiple frequency bands with different characteristics in one radar system. In this way, the inside of the cloud is observed at a high resolution, and the determination of rain, snow and clouds (fog) is possible. The prototype is scheduled by the end of 2024, and research and development will be conducted with the aim of starting operation around 2030.

Drones can fly in drizzle and weak rain, but it is difficult to fly in heavy rain. For this reason, it is necessary to understand the clouds on the flight route in detail in order to understand the strength of the rain and arrive at the destination. However, it is difficult to observe the inside of the clouds at high resolution, even if conventional technology such as existing weather radar, live camera, and satellite images, such as satellite images. Therefore, in order to support the safe operation of the next -generation empty mobility and the optimal route selection, we have launched a new multi -frequency meteorological radar that closes low -altitude weather phenomena flying by drones.

Conventional weather radar used a single frequency band for one radar system, but this study uses multiple frequency bands in the world's first radar system. The frequency band has the characteristic that the weather phenomenon that is easy to capture differs depending on the type.By using this characteristics, the inside of the cloud can be highly imaged, and the difference between rain, snow, and clouds can be determined.

This multi -frequency weather radar is planning to complete a prototype by the end of 2024, and will also provide demonstration experiments to support drones. After that, we aim to start operation around 2030 after mass production prototypes. In addition, Professor Tomoo Ushio, the Graduate School of Engineering, Osaka University, will participate in this study, and will conduct research and development with technical guidance and advice. In addition, the Company is the National Aerospace Aerona Corporation of the Aertrial Aviation and Development of the National R & D Corporation, Science and Technology Agency (JST), the “Future Social Creation Project (Large -scale Project Type)” for the 3rd year ( * 1).(JAXA) will participate as a joint research group of R & D issues ( * 2) proposed and adopted, and will be supported as part of this, and will promote this research and development.
