Chizuru Iijima preparing for the screening in the projection room = Kawagoe La Scala in Motomachi, Kawagoe City

Proceeding through the back alleys, you will find a movie theater that seems to have been lost in the Showa period. It is the "Kawagoe La Scala" that originated from the yose "Ichiriki-tei" that opened in 1905 (Meiji 38). It has been transmitting culture in Motomachi, Kawagoe City, Saitama Prefecture for over a century. Currently, Chizuru Iijima (48), the deputy representative director of the NPO Playground, which operates a movie theater, is in charge of programming and events. What happened ... "Upside-down feet" that jumped out of the water ahead of the people who pointed at the camera, set up by craftsmen at the Kadokawa Film Festival, and screened the work

For Mr. Iijima from Kawagoe City, the first memory of Kawagoe La Scala was seeing "Antarctica" (published in 1983) with her family as a child. She loved movies after she grew up, but she recalls, "I never thought she would do a movie job." Kawagoe La Scala was temporarily closed in May 2007 when her predecessor owner retired. The playground took over and revived in August. Mr. Iijima found her job posted in her mansion and applied. He became a volunteer in 2008. She experienced working at a company unrelated to movies, and entered a new world in her mid-30s. After working part-time, she was in charge of programming and events from around the spring of 2009, and became a full-time staff member of the movie theater. And in 2011, she became the deputy representative director of an NPO corporation. Since the current system, it has been screened for one to two weeks, focusing on those that are different from the major commercial movies. Mr. Iijima keeps a sincere attitude, saying, "I watch about 300 previews a year, but I watch the whole story from the beginning to the end and choose it. Otherwise, I can't evaluate it."

At the event, we have held a participatory experience-based and interactive project, such as creating a question and answer time for the director's stage greetings and setting up a welcome time to sing together in a musical movie. However, the situation is severe, as the content is restricted under the corona and the upper limit of admission is reduced to 82 seats, which is two-thirds of the capacity of 124 seats. Still, Mr. Iijima smiled, "The movie theater that remains because it is a city that values old things. This is a place where culture accumulates. I want to continue to be a place where you can take a break."
